Cranberries in the News:
Anti-cancer – Recently, preliminary results at the Univ. of Western Ontario indicate compounds in cranberries may prove to be a potent cancer fighter.
Anti-aging – There is compelling evidence, using an animal model, that cranberry can help protect the brain from neurological damage (unpublished results).
Dental – (2002) A clinical trial using a mouthwash containing cranberry NDM, showed a two order of magnitude reduction in dental caries producing Streptococcus mutans colony forming units compared with the placebo group (unpublished data).
Heart – Cranberry 90MX powder supplied by Ocean Spray contains significant amounts of flavonoids and polyphenolic compounds that have been demonstrated to inhibit low density lipoprotein oxidation. LDL oxidation is the primary event in atherosclerosis plaque formation.

Relating to the interaction of the drug warfarin with cranberry products, until more information is known, monitoring of the INR and symptoms of bleeding should be considered in patients who consume larger amounts of cranberry juice, in those who drink cranberry juice on an ongoing basis, and in those who take cranberry supplements. Pharmacist’s Letter states: This interaction will show up when filling a warfarin Rx. But don't worry too much about warfarin patients drinking cranberry juice. It's not likely to cause a problem for most people.
